JaLowe's Shots - Mixology Fun

Theme Team: Frozen

Okay, I know I was saying The Theme Teams would be based on an ingredient, but after finishing up with that Watermelon Cooler from the Rums, I decided to go with frozen drinks. I know the Cooler wasn’t a frozen drink, but it however was a cool drink. And since we are in the dog days of summer (sorry Brutus, old boy, but it’s true) I thought it would be a nifty idea to feature stuff to keep you cool. Sorry, Vodka, next time for sure.

Here, to make up for it Vodka, here’s one for you.

Bunky Punch

  • 1 1/2 oz vodka
  • 1 oz melon liqueur (Midori folks)
  • 1 oz Peach Schnapps
  • 1 1/2 oz cranberry juice (Oceanspray is my favorite)
  • 2 oz Orange Juice
  • 1/2 oz grape juice
  • 1 cup crushed ice

Combine ingredients into blender. Blend until smooth (like Keith Stone). Pour into Parfait glass. Garnish with lime wedge.

Sorry, I couldn’t find a picture for this one you guys. This drink does sound fantastic. I think I’ll put this one on my must drink list for this weekend.

Next up for you cherry lovers.

Cherry Repair Kit

  • 1/2 oz Half and Half
  • 1/2 oz créme de cacao (white)
  • 1/2 oz Amaretto
  • 6 maraschino cherries
  • 1/2 oz Maraschino liqueur

Combine all ingredients with 1 cup of crushed ice in blender until smooth. Pour into parfait glass. Garnish with a cherry and serve with a straw.

Now this is a great smooth, creamy drink. It’s a frozen drink that’s great for a warm evening. Again, sorry, I couldn’t find a picture for this one. What I did find via Google and Bing, well… Would’ve made this NSFW or NC18

Here’s a good one with ice cream.

Chilly Irishman

  • 3 oz cold espresso
  • 1 oz Irish Whiskey
  • 1/2 oz coffee liqueur (Kahlua)
  • 1/2 oz Irish Cream Liqueur (Bailey’s or O’Mara’s)
  • 1 scoop Vanilla Ice Cream
  • 1 dash superfine sugar or simple syrup

Combine all ingredients in blender with 4 cups of crushed ice. Blend until smooth. Pour into parfait glass.

I guess you could say this is a different take on an irish coffee. I’ve had something very similiar to this before and that drink was great. I can’t remember what it was called. It was at this little hole in the wall bar in Houston that had an Irish theme to it.

Peppermint Penguin A representation by Bunnygirle26

  • 1/2 oz Créme de Menthe (green)
  • 1/2 oz chocolate mint liqueur
  • 3 Chocolate Sandwich Cookies (Oreos)
  • 3 oz light cream

Combine all ingredients in blender with 1 cup of crushed ice. Blend until smooth. Pour into hurricane glass. Top with whipped cream. Garnish with a cookie and cherry.

I will admit, I have had one of these. But it wasn’t called a Peppermint Penguin. It’s sweet and tasty. It’s a nice drink to buy your sweetheart or send to that pretty lady you’ve been seeing at the bar all night. I couldn’t find a picture and I was kinda getting bummed about not finding any for the drinks, so I just added this one. Thanks to Bunnygirle26 from DeviantArt.

And here is the last one for the post.

Tidal Wave

  • 1 3/4 oz Melon Liqueur (Midori)
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • 1/2 oz coconut syrup
  • 3/4 oz superfine sugar or simple syrup
  • 3/4 oz lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz light rum

Combine all ingredients in blender with 1 cup of crushed ice. Blend until smooth.

Pour into parfait glass. Garnish with a lime wheel and cherry.

Going online for photos and I found a few variations for this drink. Seeing their ingredients, I decided not to use their pictures. A lot of them left out the melon liqueur.

So there you have it. Frozen drinks. I mean, what’s better during these dog days of summer (no Brutus you can’t have any, you are a dog). So I hope you all enjoy these. I’ll be back next week with more stuff. Until then, you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here. Be sure to tip your bartenders and waitresses.

Agree with me? Don’t? Well let me know. Drop a line in the submissions or reply or photo reply.

Thanks everyone.

Theme Team: Rum

Yo Ho Ho! Argh! So the next theme team is gonna be Rum! Now rum is probably one of my favorite alcoholic beverages. It’s a great mixer and good on it’s own. My favorite is simply, rum and coke. Now I’m not sure if you all know why rum has such a great sweetness to it? Well, it’s basically sugarcane. There’s 2 methods to the madness. Some will just use nothing but the sugarcane juice while others will boil down the cane juice and get molasses and use that. I, frankly, think there’s no wrong way to make rum. Frankly, I don’t think there’s a wrong way to drink it either. So here we go. Let’s set sail with rum, mateys!

Now I love this first drink!

Bahama Mama

  • 1/2 oz dark rum
  • 1/2 oz coconut liqueur (CocoRibe baby!)
  • 1/4 oz coffee liqueur (Kahlua)
  • 1/4 oz 151-proof rum
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 4 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 pineapple stick

Shake well and pour over ice into tall collins glass. Garnish with pineapple stick.

Now of course, you can up the ante and double up on the ingredients and make a larger drink, something that’s designed to fit into a fishbowl or something. But to me this is what rum is about. Giving you that tropical feel wherever you may be. How else can you be in Fargo and feel like your in Key Largo.

Cuba Libre

  • 2 oz Golden Rum (I use Barcardi Gold for this one)
  • 1/2 Lime
  • Iced Cola

Halfway-fill a tall 14 oz glass with coarse ice or ice cubes. Add rum. Squeeze lime above drink and drop into glass. Fill with coke. Stir well.

With this one you can sub in a Jamaican rum instead of the golden rum or go half and half on it. For an even rummier bite, you can float a teaspoon of 151-proof rum on top. This is a classic drink. I love it. Sometimes instead of the standard Coca Cola, I’ll use RC Cola instead. RC has this bite to it that lends itself well to the drink.

Isle of the Blessed Coconut

  • 1 1/2 oz Light Rum
  • 1/oz Cream of Coconut
  • 1/2 oz Lime Juice
  • 1/4 oz Lemon Juice
  • 1/4 oz Orange Juice
  • 1/2 tsp Sugar
  • 1/3 cup Crushed Ice

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend at low speed for about 10-15 seconds. Pour into a deep saucer champagne glass.

A cool companion to this drink is to serve it with some toasted coconut slices. Or you can companion it with a bit of french vanilla ice cream with toasted coconut shavings on top.

Another classic rum drink:

The Hurricane

  • 1 oz light rum
  • 1 oz golden rum
  • 1/2 passion fruit syrup
  • 2 tsp lime juice

Shake well with ice and strain into a prechilled cocktail glass.

You can always double and triple this recipe and pop it into a fun serving container. I say container, because this is one of the perfect drinks to serve in a coconut cup. Or again, try a hurricane glass.

This next one goes out to my buddy, Chris because, well, he loves the creature for which this drink is named for.

Zombie

  • 1 1/2 oz dark rum
  • 1 1/2 light rum
  • 1/2 oz Apricot Brandy
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz Barcardi 151
  • 1 pineapple stick

Shake rums, brandy, and juices very well with ice. Pour into a tall 13-14 oz glass/ Float the 151 on top. Garnish with pineapple stick and sleep well tonight. :)

When I was picking out what to use for this post, there was just so many. I don’t want to use too many, so I’m just gonna give you 1 more for right now.

Watermelon Cooler

  • 1/2 oz diced watermelon sans the seeds
  • 2 1/4 oz light rum
  • 1/2 oz lime juice
  • 1/4 oz maraschino liqueur
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 crushed ice
  • 1 slice of lime or watermelon

Put watermelon, rum, lime juice, maraschino liqueur, sugar, and ince into blender. Blend for about 10-15 seconds at low speed. Pour into tall 14 oz glass. When foam subsides add ice to fill glass. Stir. Garnish with lime or watermelon.

Heck, I think this one looks great in the picture. I never thought about adding the sprig of mint. This is a great drink for summer! It’s cool and very refreshing. Now that I see that mint, I’m thinking you could muddle the mint at the bottom of the glass before the drink into the glass. I’m actually going to try that this weekend.I just need to pick up some maraschino liqueur now.

Well, guys that ends our voyage on the sea of rum. Hope you’ve enjoyed it!
